Former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom gave his first interview since Turkish authorities offered a 10 million Turkish lira (about $500, 000) reward for information leading to the basketball player`s arrest. I am a basketball player and I try to symbolize peace, love, freedom and democracy throughout the world and that makes me a bad person. Unfortunately, there is neither democracy nor freedom in Turkey now. There are many human rights violations and political prisoners in Turkey.
Turkiye could become a bridge between Islam and the West, but due to Erdogan`s policies this is impossible. I love my country, I love my people, I love my flag. I have problems with the current regime. I know that when the Erdogan regime leaves, Turkiye will become a more democratic and more peaceful country.
If you criticize the Erdogan regime in Turkey, the next day you will end up in prison. If you are outside Turkey and say anything against the Erdogan regime, firstly, they will put your family in prison, and secondly, they will put your name on the Interpol list. They will try to return you to Turkey. They will put you on their most wanted list and put a bounty on your head.
I haven`t seen my family for almost 10 years. I spoke about some problems happening in Turkey and they put my father in jail. Now there is no communication between me and my family because my family knows that as soon as I pick up the phone and call them, the next day they will be in jail.
My family was forced to publicly disown me so that the Turkish government would leave them alone. Unfortunately, my family suffers from abuse every day. My mother cannot go out freely because people will say something bad to her. My father cannot even enter the mosque; he was kicked out of the mosque.
I will give you a very clear example. I have a manager, he is from Bosnia, his wife is from Turkey. His wife`s father spent 13 days in jail just for liking one of my tweets. It`s crazy, but people in Turkey can`t even speak freely anymore.
If you are in another party, if you say anything against the Erdogan regime, if you speak or post on Facebook or say anything on Instagram, you will end up in prison. The best example is Sedef Kabas. She wrote something on her Twitter. The next day she was imprisoned. "I want people to understand what is happening in Turkey, " Kanter Freedom said in an interview with Bosnian TV channel N1.
